Controversy over cutting of ‘Boondocks’ episodes

Sooner or later, any satirist who wins a Peabody Award for re-animating the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and having him denounce "Soul Plane" runs the risk of upsetting corporate America.

That's one theory being floated this week as "The Boondocks" creator Aaron McGruder informs faithful viewers of his edgy, irreverent Adult Swim series that Cartoon Network has unexpectedly shortened the 'toon's second season from a planned 15-episode run to 13.

Fifteen episodes were in fact produced but two, titled "The Huey Freeman Hunger Strike" and "The Ruckus Reality Show" aren't currently scheduled to air, allegedly due to controversial material targeting Black Entertainment Television executives.

On his Myspace.com page, McGruder has posted the following message to fans: "Okay, so … maybe it's a 13-episode season." More cryptically, links to YouTube clips said to contain content from the episodes posted on McGruder's Myspace page have been mysteriously taken down (when users click on the links to the clips to view them, a "We're sorry, this video is no longer available" message pops up instead).

Rising to the challenge of carbon neutrality

Although it depends on the building type, typically compliance with the Seattle Energy Code can get us close.

The requirement in the 2030 Challenge is 50 percent less than CBECS, which is a recording of how much energy actual buildings use right now. It is not 50 percent better than ASHRAE 90.1, which is the benchmark used for the LEED rating system. Both the U.S. Green Building Council and ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) are reported to be working to align their performance targets with CBECS.

Terry Townsend, president of ASHRAE, says that by 2010 ASHRAE 90.1 will be 30 percent more stringent than in 2004. He estimates that will signify a 58 percent reduction compared with CBECS.

Achieving the two mandatory energy credits for LEED means that your project will be 14 percent better than ASHRAE 90.1.

Settings, speakers could improve DVDs' sound

Q: The sound on rented VCR tapes and DVDs is usually so poor, I can barely hear the dialogue, even with my TV sound turned up to the maximum. Sometimes it is impossible to hear across the room, even when the air conditioner is off. Sometimes the background music overpowers the dialogue.

This happens with rented DVDs and videos, but never with programs I tape from broadcasts via basic cable (no converter box).

Broadcast sound is always adequate.

What might cause this? Is this because of the size of my TV (13 inches)? Would a larger TV solve the problem? How can I improve the movie sound without spending big bucks?--Alice Bratter

A: Hi-fi videotapes and DVDs are recorded at sound levels meant for the home theater experience. This means they have wide dynamic range, meaning soft sounds are soft and loud sounds can get very loud.

Looking for solutions to the carbon conundrum

We would consume less energy to heat homes and business therefore less pollution.
. We would have a longer growing season, less crop failure, maybe two crops a year.,
. We would reduce imports of food products grown in the south, we can grow them in Canada.
. We could move crop production further north.
. We could finally open the North West Passage Posted 01/02/08 at 10:04 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Asset-based lenders notice business boost

These aren't exactly banner days for many financial companies, as mortgage lenders close their doors, investment bankers hemorrhage red ink and credit-card firms grapple with rising delinquencies.

But there are a few bright spots in the finance arena, and asset-based lenders occupy one of them.

These firms make business loans secured by accounts receivable, inventories, equipment and other assets, though usually not real estate. .
