PUBLIC AFFAIRS: What's up at UWI? Graduate students cite inadequate ...

In the Caribbean, the University of the West Indies (UWI) has regarded itself as the leading institution in the area of research. The university brags about its numerous publications in top international journals and research relevant to our West Indian and wider global societies.

At the UWI Mona campus, the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences houses the most research students. Research from within that faculty has impacted the Caribbean and the world. Areas of research include medicine, bauxite, agriculture, food-processing industries, disaster management, crucial geological data and theories, atmospheric physics, notably global warming. Some of us can recall the issue of the salt that we export to Guyana becoming discoloured before arrival, ackee research, sickle cell, etc. The faculty has also produced many scholars in the areas of inorganic-reaction mechanisms, catalysis, organic synthesis, polymers, natural products, carbohydrate chemistry, climate-impact studies, Caribbean tectonics (geology), and Mona geographic information systems (GIS).

How Vatican reacted to mission's wind of change

IT WAS established as a haven where Polish war veterans could worship and in recent years became a place where young migrants could discuss their worries and share their faith. But now a row has erupted over the future of a Catholic mission which exposes a split between the traditional church back in Poland and the new generation of economic migrants. At its heart is a reformist priest who tried to support the influx of devout young Poles, struggling to balance independence with the values of old Poland, where the church exerts a great deal of influence. Now Father Edward Hodurek has been ordered back to Poland by the Vatican and a hall used by the Polish community in Falkirk has been closed and put up for sale. Members of the congregation have been told to attend masses conducted by 30 traditional priests recently brought over from Poland and whose upkeep is to be paid for by the sale of the United Polish Mission. The migrants, led by Joanna Creslik, the chairwoman of a support group for the town's 2,000 recently arrived Poles, have launched a campaign to prevent the sale.

Helping underprivileged boys

Miriam Braun came a long way to spread her message to Boca Raton.

Her motivating factor was a group of 6 to 15-year-old underprivileged boys who are the key to her heart.

"Their families are poverty stricken, dysfunctional, and the children suffered severe physical and emotional abuse and neglect in their earlier years," said Braun.

Braun recently visited Boca Raton Synagogue to raise awareness of the Sanhedria Children's Home in Jerusalem, Israel, which is a rehab center for children at risk who have been removed from parents' home by court order and who are referred by Social Services. The children come from dysfunctional households, where there is often a history of alcoholism, physical and verbal abuse, and many come from an underprivileged background.

REP. RON KLEIN REFUSES TO REMOVE KEITH ELLISON FROM ANTI-SEMITISM TASK ...

Both MAS and CAIR had recently been named by the U.S. government as being part of the Muslim Brotherhood, and CAIR had been linked by the FBI to Hamas.

According to Kogen, Rep. Klein approached Ellison to ask him about the information he (Klein) received from his meeting with AAH, and Ellison told him that he had "publicly denounced" and would continue to publicly denounce the anti-Semitism from the groups (MAS and CAIR). Kogen told Kaufman that Rep. Klein was satisfied with Rep. Ellison's statements to him and that they were consistent with the principles of the anti-Semitism task force.

However, Americans Against Hate points out that, to its knowledge, never has Keith Ellison publicly denounced any of the organizations in question. He has never denounced the anti-Semitism from the groups nor any of the terrorist connections of the groups.
