Transcript of The Times interview with David Petraeus

The months of April, May, June even into July, and the very tough casualties that we sustained and that our Iraqi partners sustained as we went into al-Qaeda sanctuaries and had to fight to take them away, which was again, we knew it was going to happen. You may recall that I said this is going to get harder before it get easier, but that was very, very hard. And there were moments when General Odierno [Commanding Genral of US III Corps] and I would look at each other and say ’When are we going to get to that point? When are we going to cross this?’ It did finally come, although I am not implying that we have turned corners or are seeing lights at the end of the tunnel or are doing victory dances in the end zone because we are doing none of that.

Ambassador Crocker and I won’t even characterize ourselves as an optimist or a pessimist at this point.

Pipe producers win a victory over imports

It's not the final round of the fight, but American pipe producers racked up big points on Tuesday when the U.S. Department of Commerce ruled that Chinese pipe producers unfairly subsidized their products. Pipe producers win a victory over imports China subsidizes pipe, ITC rules By Michael Roknick Herald Business Editor SHENANGO VALLEY — It's not the final round of the fight, but American pipe producers racked up big points on Tuesday when the U.S. Department of Commerce ruled that Chinese pipe producers unfairly subsidized their products.

In its preliminary finding, the ITC said Wheatland Tube Co., Sharon Tube Co. and four other American pipe producers were the victims of improper Chinese subsidies on circular welded steel pipe exports to the U.S.

The companies, along with the United Steelworkers, had filed a trade suit with the Commerce Department in June and also a dumping suit with the U.S.

Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"

The Otis and I are celebrating our 7th anniversary (and my 28th birthday) with our 2nd annual Karaoke Idol competition. Last year's was a blast. And I was truly honored that I wasn't one of the Bottom Three. (Though I thought I was deserving). My song is "Fancy." I've Athol-fied the lyrics, which should help me get in the judges good graces. Because I can tell you right now that my vocal stylings definitely won't help me win that shiny 1st place trophy. (Yes, folks, we are doing trophies this year). And I'm thinking of dressing the part. Maybe some Wranglers and a Stetson? -- Mommy Dearest/BrodH20.

Mommy Dearest's Quandry: We have an awesome panel of judges: The Paula-licious Leenda the Ball, Megs Cowell and newbie Orange TV. Based on last year's judging, I haven't decided whether it's better to perform early when the judges are still stone-cold sober, or if it's better to wait until they've got that warm and fuzzy feeling in their veins.

Jeff Thelen's Blog

I know some people really like the previews, so may be we were out of line. On the other hand, I sort of felt like he jumped the gun telling us to be quiet before the movie ever began.

I'm sort of lost here, does anyone know proper theater etiquette?

J

Respond to Jeff's blog here:

UPDATE ON 1/30/08Hi everybody and thanks for all the responses! There are so many I can't answer them all, except the ones that need to be directly addressed. In a nutshell, there really doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule here. With some saying my friends and I were rude and others saying the guy in front of me jumped the gun. JWell Jeff I guess it depends on the theatre. Here in Phillips I don't hear people talking much before, during, or after the movie.

Wild Card/Vacation Day 11 of 12

Only two more shopping days until I return to the final days of the City Council campaigns. Then, we'll have fun taking apart the campaigns. Any dirt yet? Any mudslinging. You know, the good stuff. Or is everyone behaving? My wife is now looking over my shoulder -- literally -- so I have to pretend that I'm just checking ball scores. See ya in two days. Here's Wild Card ...
